The favorite vacation island of Saxony is currently showing an unusual, almost bizarre side: The Baltic Sea off Rügen has frozen over. A rare natural spectacle – and apparently reason enough for many Saxons to spontaneously head to the coast, even in winter. But for the perfect photo, some are even venturing onto the ice. Beneath it lurks an invisible danger: Police and rescue services are warning of the risk to life. The crowds are so large that areas have had to be closed off – but it seems that not everyone is heeding the closures. Why is the Baltic Sea ice so fascinating, and why is the situation becoming difficult for emergency services?
