Czym jest moralne dystansowanie się i czemu wszyscy to robimy? | prof. Mariola Paruzel-Czachura

We tend to treat alcohol as a justification for our own or others' morally questionable choices. This argument is sometimes even used in court or by the police. However, psychological research shows that alcohol does not dull our ability to distinguish right from wrong. 📖 Discover our publishing house: https://radionaukowe.pl/wydawnictwo 📚 Convenient book shopping: https://wydawnictwoRN.pl 👉 Become a Patron: https://patronite.pl/radionaukowe 👉 Make a one-time donation: https://suppi.pl/radionaukowe 🎧 Listen on streaming: https://ffm.bio/radionaukowe 🔔 Subscribe: https://youtube.com/@RadioNaukowe?sub... 🌐 Website: https://radionaukowe.pl 👍 Facebook:   / radionaukowe   📷 Instagram:   / radionaukowe   ❌ Twitter:   / radionaukowe   🎓 Visit LAMU:    / @letniaakademiamlodychumyslow   🎬 Watch More:    • Radio Naukowe poleca   📩 Contact: [email protected] We tend to treat alcohol as a factor justifying our own or others' morally questionable choices. This argument is sometimes even used in court or with the police. However, psychological research shows that alcohol does not in any way dull our ability to distinguish right from wrong. "There are no differences in thinking. And this knowledge is very important because someone might, for example, justify their actions to their wife or to a judge: 'I was drunk, I didn't know what I was doing,'" says Professor Mariola Paruzel-Czachura, a specialist in moral psychology at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Silesia. Morality consists of our views on right and wrong, the emotions that violating a given norm evokes in us, and our behavior in specific situations. Research clearly shows that these three layers diverge: what we believe about a given topic often has nothing to do with how we will behave in a similar situation and what emotions we will experience. It's natural to tend to perceive ourselves as slightly better than we actually are. "We have a line of research that shows that the most important trait in every human being is thinking of ourselves as a good person," says the psychologist. Research consistently shows that when it comes to moral matters, we also tend to follow the crowd. If many people before us have ignored a moral norm, it will be easier for us to ignore it as well. This sounds like a bleak vision of society, of course, but it's not that bad. "Conformism works both ways; people forget about it. Because we do bad things in the company of others, but we can also do good things in the company of others," argues Professor Paruzel-Czachura. So, you can model good examples, helping others, etc., and that will work too. Another surprising finding from psychologists is that our moral choices are influenced by whether we make them in our own language or in a foreign language (which we speak well enough, so to speak). In a foreign language, we tend to be less sensitive to moral norms. "The conclusion is: it's better to make moral decisions in your native language," the psychologist points out. So be careful when vacationing abroad! In this episode, you'll also learn that non-neurotypical people are less prone to moral hypocrisy, how morality is a biological matter, and why guilt helps us develop, while shame doesn't.
