📌 Raising the Hands in Prayer (Raf'ul Yadain) 🎙 Ustaz Nazratullah Abu Maryam (may Allah be pleased with him) 📖 The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Pray as you see me praying." This hadith was narrated by al-Bukhari (631). For this reason, 'Ali ibn al-Madini, Imam al-Bukhari's teacher, said: "Muslims should raise their hands before bowing and when raising their heads from it." Al-Bukhari said: "'Ali was the most knowledgeable of the people of his time." It is not permissible for anyone, after the Sunnah has become clear (to them), to abandon an action in accordance with it, blindly following the scholar who spoke about it. Imam ash-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "The scholars are unanimously agreed that one for whom the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has become clear, is not permitted to abandon it because of the words of someone else." If a person follows Abu Hanifa, or Malik, or ash-Shafi'i, or Ahmad, and he sees that another's madhhab is stronger in certain matters and follows him, then his action will be excellent and will in no way tarnish his religion or righteousness, and there is no disagreement on this. Moreover, this is closer to the truth and more beloved to Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). End of quote. Sheikh al-Islam, may Allah have mercy on him, stated this in al-Fatawa 22/247. The scholars who said that one should not raise one's hands are justified in this, as they are mujtahids and will receive reward (from Allah) for their diligence and search for the truth, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "If a judge makes a decision with diligence[4] and it is correct[5], he will have a double reward; but if he makes a decision with diligence and it is wrong, he will have a single reward." Note: There is a fourth place where it is recommended to raise one's hands during prayer, and that is when one stands up after reciting the first tashahhud to perform the third rak'ah.
