ARANCIA ROSSA DI SICILIA IGP: Fragilità, valore e futuro di un patrimonio agricolo unico

A year that had begun with the best quality and production promises suddenly found itself faced with extreme weather events. In January, a violent hurricane struck part of the coastal areas of eastern Sicily, causing damage to citrus crops and bringing the fragility of one of the most important supply chains in Italian agriculture back into the spotlight: the Sicilian Blood Orange. This context informed the episode of "Nature from Field to Table," aired on the national television network 7Gold, which presented the Blood Orange not only as a product of excellence, but as a complex system made up of land, labor, climate, and future responsibilities. From the heart of the Etna region, in Biancavilla (Catania), Salvatore Rapisarda, director of the Consorzio Euroagrumi OP, described a citrus fruit season of the highest quality, despite the challenging weather of the previous months. "In terms of quality and quantity, we are at the top. Despite the drought, the climate has overcome the initial difficulties, giving us a product extraordinary in flavor, size, and color,” Rapisarda explained, recalling how the broadcast was recorded before the mid-January hurricane. The Blood Orange is Sicily's most important agricultural product, with approximately 100,000 hectares under cultivation that generate economic activity, employment, and environmental protection. It is a product deeply tied to the Etna region, as Rapisarda himself described with a fitting metaphor: “The orange comes from the Himalayas, but when it reaches the foot of Etna, it's as if it were saying, ‘I'm home.’ And it's here that it gives its best.” Agronomist Alfredo Cageggi explained what makes the Sicilian PGI Blood Orange truly unique, emphasizing the crucial role of Etna's microclimate. "The red color isn't just aesthetic, but the result of the temperature difference between day and night, the volcano near the sea, and unique conditions that induce the plant to produce anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants." A nutritional value that, paradoxically, can increase even in the most difficult years. From the producers' perspective, Carmelo Cantarella described a complex campaign, marked by drought and abnormal temperatures, but sustained by a strong sense of identity. "We've been growing blood oranges for thirty years. Despite the difficulties, our passion is immense and drives us to continue, also for the future of new generations." The topic of agricultural income and the correct perception of quality was central. "Size is not an indicator of quality," Rapisarda reminded us. "In periods of drought, the fruit may be smaller, but it is often richer in vitamin C and anthocyanins." Considerable attention was also given to protecting the product's identity. Gerardo Diana, president of the Sicilian Blood Orange PGI Protection Consortium, emphasized the role of regulations and the need to better communicate the environmental and health benefits of this "heroic" fruit, capable of adapting to extreme climate conditions and now among the most consumed PGIs in Italy. The story also included the packaging phase, with a visit to the Portobello cooperative's warehouses, and the markets, where—as Duccio Caccioni, director of the Bologna Agri-food Center, explained—the Blood Orange maintains a strong distinctive power due to its quality, origin, and health benefits. The episode finally highlighted the system's critical structural issues, from water management to labor, to the strategic role of the processing industry and consumer communication. Concluding the tour, Salvatore Rapisarda reiterated the profound significance of supply chain work: "The Blood Orange is an absolute excellence that must be communicated in the right way. This is what we are doing today, working with schools, large-scale retailers, and through broadcasts that speak directly to consumers, describing a product that is good for health and the environment."
