Le Palais des Papes : La forteresse du pouvoir pontifical | GEDEON ARCHEO | FORMAT COURT

#medievalhistory #papalestates #avignon In 1309, faced with the conflicts tearing the Holy See apart in Rome, Pope Clement VII decided to establish the papal court in Avignon. It would not be returned to Rome until 1377. Surrounded by imposing ramparts and 10 towers, the Avignon Palace appeared as an impregnable fortress. The seven Popes who resided within these walls transformed the modest episcopal palace into a magnificent Gothic palace.
