The foundation of the Church of St. Stephen dates back to the Middle Ages, when the village of Casalmaggiore (Italy) was enhanced by the passage of the most important woman of the year 1000. The new monumental abbey was built between 1840 and 1846 in classical style; next to the pharaonic Greek temple-style pronaos, the 70-metre bell tower was built in 1897, on which eight new bells were placed in 1899, with a total weight of 76 quintals. In the 15th century, it was enlarged to three naves and eleven altars, when 40 priests resided there. After the palace was built, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria granted the title of city, an honour that prompted the inhabitants to request promotion to bishopric. The bishop of Cremona did everything he could to prevent this from happening. The pope promoted the parish priest to abbot, with perpetual right to celebrate pontificals. At the beginning of the 19th century, more than 120 priests lived in the city, making the celebrations more solemn than those of all the surrounding dioceses. The new church was built after the demolition of the old one and is one of the largest in the region.
