On November 9, 1971, he was nominated as Prime Minister of the Republic of Vietnam. On November 10, 1971, a briefcase containing 4 kg of C4 was thrown under his car at a traffic light in Saigon. The perpetrator of the assassination—40 years later—recounted the event in the press. Not a word of remorse. Nguyen Van Bong (1929–1971) was a Professor of Law, Director of the National Academy of Public Administration, and President of the National Progressive Movement—the largest civil political organization in South Vietnam in the late 1960s. Born from a poor family in Go Cong, Tien Giang, he bought a third-class train ticket to France in 1949, working as a waiter and night porter to pay for his tuition at the Sorbonne University. After 13 years, he returned to Vietnam with a PhD in Law and Political Science—one of the very few Vietnamese to achieve this academic level at the time. In August 1971, his movement won 21 seats in the South Vietnamese House of Representatives. On November 9, 1971, President Nguyen Van Thieu officially nominated him as Prime Minister. 24 hours later—he died at the intersection of Cao Thang and Phan Thanh Gian streets in Saigon. The perpetrators: the armed reconnaissance team of the T4 Security Department, National Liberation Front of South Vietnam. The reason, revealed by the perpetrators themselves, was: "If G.33 had taken the position of Prime Minister, the revolution would have faced greater difficulties because the government would have shifted from military to civilian." Following the assassination, the National Progressive Movement disintegrated. The opportunity for civilianization of the South Vietnamese government ended.
