Making traditional Awa-Indigo dye with NO chemicals or additives
Sukumo is a natural dye made of indigo leaves, and is famous in Tokushima prefecture, where is it known as Awa-indigo. A lot of indigo dyers live there, but not many sukumo makers, whose numbers have dwindled since the advent of chemical dyes. Come take a look inside one of the last remaining sukumo producers! I originally shot this footage for Cool Hunting, as part of their collaboration with Ferrari. Please check out the information here: https://ferrari.coolhunting.com/ Some of my photos are up there, as well as video from other Japanese artisans involved in the project!
