Inside Plumb: The Ohio Axe Factory That Vanished Overnight

The Plumb name once stood for some of the finest striking tools ever made in America. Founded in Philadelphia in 1869 by Fayette Rumsey Plumb and Jonathan Yerkes, the company pioneered cast steel axe production and became the largest axe manufacturer in the United States. During World War I, the Bridesburg factory produced millions of trench tools for Allied soldiers, with women operating massive drop hammers and furnaces under wartime demand. Over the next century, Plumb survived wars, industrial change, and the decline of American logging. But after a series of corporate acquisitions, the factory closed and the craftsmanship that built the brand disappeared. Today, collectors still search for vintage Plumb axes because they recognize something modern manufacturing often loses: quality built by people who understood the work itself. #History #AmericanIndustry #ToolMaking #WorldWar1 #Manufacturing #Philadelphia #Axes #IndustrialHistory
