Mahler, "Come suono di natura". Con Carlo Serra e Alessandro Maria Carnelli

The opening movement of Gustav Mahler's First Symphony raises troubling questions, beginning with the tempo marking "Like a sound of nature" at the beginning of the score. This expressive note sparked the investigation of music philosopher Carlo Serra in the book that shares the title of Mahler's incipit: "Metaphysics of Melody in Gustav Mahler's First Symphony" (Galaad Edizioni). Starting from the Viennese composer's instructions, which describe his desire to treat melodic form like a plant in metamorphosis, following a famous Goethean model, the book seeks to develop a philosophical reading of the symphony, drawing on the conceptual foundations that the works of Goethe and Schopenhauer carved into the composer's education. The book's theme will be explored in a dialogue between the author and conductor Alessandro Maria Carnelli, guests at MaMu. Live streaming on our YouTube channel.
