Liparit Avetisyan performs 'Una furtiva lagrima' – L'elisir d’amore (The Royal Opera)

Donizetti’s comic opera buffa L’elisir d’amore combines a touching love story, a swindling quack doctor and intoxicating comedy with beautiful music, including the much-loved aria ‘Una furitiva lagrima’ (a furtive tear). The aria appears in Act II of the opera as Nemorino (Liparit Avetisyan) laments his decision to join the army and leave behind Adina, the woman he loves and who he believes loves him. L’elisir d’amore is one of the most frequently performed of all 70 of Donizetti’s operas. The opera’s premiere at the Teatro della Canobbina was a resounding success, with wildly positive reviews and an ovation from the audience. Donizetti’s legacy as one of the leading Italian composers of his generation was secured. The Royal Opera's charming production is set in the sun-drenched countryside of 1950s Italy, complete with haystacks, Vespas and even a stray dog. It is injected with lively, visual humour, from Nemorino's tipsy clowning to Dulcamara's lumbering truck from which he sells his quack remedies.
