Any insoluble impurities get trapped in the filter and are saved for later processing. The silver ions (dissolved silver) travel through the silver nitrate electrolyte and deposit as high purity elemental silver on the inside of the stainless steel bowl. The stainless steel bowl is the cathode and it is connected to the negative side of the DC power supply, thus completing the electrical circuit for the cell to operate.
