When Mother Love Bone frontman Andrew Wood dies tragically in 1990, Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell was devastated. He was trying to work through his emotions and knew that music would be the only cathartic way to do it. As he wrote some very heavy songs had knew they wouldn’t work for his band so he connected with the remaining Mother Love Bone band members Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament as well as new guitarist Mike McCready to create Temple of the Dog and the song Hunger Strike a veritable 90s masterwork. When he struggled to get exactly what he wanted on the song Hunger Strike, Eddie Vedder stepped up to the mic and the two made history. Where we go behind the greatest duets in Rock History This time we take a turn on an alternative route… After receiving a flood of requests to take a deep dive into this one, today we are telling the story of the immortal tribute to the downtrodden... Hunger Strike, by Seattle’s own Temple of the Dog. When Soundgarden lead singer Chris Cornell walked into the hospital room of his close friend, Mother Love Bone icon Andy Wood, there really were no words to express his shock and disbelief. Stretched out before him was a motionless, nearly lifeless figure, hooked up to an array of machines designed to keep his heart pumping and his lungs breathing. Just days earlier, Andy Wood, who was a recovering heroin addict, tragically relapsed. He had overdosed on heroin and was now in a braindead coma. According to the doctors, he wasn’t going to recover. Cornell and Wood had once been roommates. They had written songs together. And competed in a friendly rivalry as up and coming Seattle rock bands... Soundgarden and Mother Love Bone. Chris had just finished performing at a club in New York when he heard the news of Andy’s overdose. He was absolutely crushed. As soon as he could, he boarded a plane to Seattle and rushed to see his fallen brother. He was the last person to arrive. The room was filled with close family, most of whom Cornell had never met. Andy’s girlfriend Xana had insisted that doctors not pull the plug until Chris arrived and could say goodbye. Chris had mixed feelings about this. On the one hand it was an honor and really cool. But on the other, it was awful. All of Andy’s family was all sitting there waiting to close the chapter. And Chris was the guy holding up the inevitable. After saying goodbye, Cornell watched the doctors pull the plug on his friend. Andy was gone. Dead at age 24. They were supposed to be invincible, Chris would later say. No one was supposed to die. And if someone did, it wasn’t supposed to be Andy. And if it did happen, it wasn’t supposed to happen like that. But the impossible had happened and Chris didn’t know what to do. The next few weeks were a living nightmare.
