In this episode of "The Dating Crisis," I'm discussing an aspect that became fully apparent to me for the first time while researching this series: The inherent misogyny contained in most conventional dating advice for women. Women aren't just the emotional shock absorbers in this society. They're also the emotional workers and space-holders in relationships with men. This pattern is unconscious and deeply ingrained in our socialization—and it destroys and stifles healthy polarity. Why? Because women learn that relationships with men mean walking on eggshells to avoid ever unsettling the male ego. And this allows men to comfortably settle into a protective posture that enables them to never look into the mirror of female Eros and recognize all their own shortcomings and failings. And then we wonder why most women in long-term relationships lose their libido? Seriously?! Her eros is a precise reflection of his capacity to contain her emotions within his presence. No woman wants a man who tucks his tail between his legs and runs away/becomes defensive as soon as she experiences an emotion. Unfortunately, this is the "normalized" relationship experience for most women: "Being too much" for the man. "Being too emotional" for the man. Until we recognize and understand that a woman's emotional energy is her erotic energy, no genuine, nurturing encounter can take place. Instead, we meet on terrain that, for women, signifies withdrawal and emotional anorexia. We shouldn't actually be surprised or astonished that the relationship between the sexes is currently so confused, fractured, and unfulfilling. And most well-intentioned advice pushes women directly into this pattern: into their role as emotional shock absorbers and emotional regulators within relationship systems.
