The Genius of the Back-to-Back Terrace | A Walk Round Headingley

A walk around the back-to-back terraces of Headingley in Leeds, and why I think we've forgotten something important about how we build. These streets were designed as a complete system. Aligned east to west so every garden gets the sun. Terraces that match. Small front gardens set back from the road. Low maintenance, low footprint, and dense enough that hundreds of families live within walking distance of shops, schools, pubs and a doctor. Fewer cars, more community, everything you need close to home. Compare that to what we build today. Bigger houses on bigger plots, pushed further out, with driveways for two or three cars and not much sense of place. I think we're building in the wrong spots and pushing people into homes they don't really want. These are cracking houses, and I think it's worth looking at them again. What do you think?
