Shinjuku HMV Record Shop Opening Party
After saying goodbye to HMV Studio Alta, I was lucky enough to be invited to a private launch party celebrating the grand opening of the new HMV record shop in Shinjuku Marui. It was an really fun event, filled with great music, good vibes, and a room full of people who truly care about records and music culture in Japan. I caught up with my friend Asa Takauchi, who helps run HMV Japan, and met Minoru Nomiyama, the new store manager, both of whom have been featured in the Tokyo Record Style photo project. I also had the chance to meet DJ Koco aka Shimokita, a legendary turntablist and vinyl DJ in Japan. If you don’t know him, he’s famous for his insane skills on 7-inch records, blending funk, hip-hop, and rare grooves with some of the slickest cuts you’ll ever hear. He’s been a huge figure in Japan’s DJ scene and was even featured on this year’s Record Store Day Japan poster. One of the more unexpected moments of the night was meeting Knxwledge. We had a great conversation, and at the time, I had no idea I was talking to an accomplished, award-winning producer who’s worked with some of the biggest names in music. It was only when I got home and looked him up that I realized, oh wow, this guy is half of NxWorries with Anderson .Paak, has produced for Kendrick Lamar, and has a massive catalog of incredible beats. Just goes to show—sometimes you meet a legend and don’t even realize it! And to top it all off, I even met the new owners of the Toshiba Record pressing plant in Gotemba who invited me to come check out their factory sometime. You better believe I’ll take them up on that! This wasn’t just a store opening, it felt like a gathering of cool people who love music and records as much as I do. It’s exciting to see HMV continue to be a major part of Tokyo’s vinyl scene, and I can’t wait to share this new space with you. Did you ever visit the old HMV in Studio Alta?
