Las Animas Creek/Massacre Canyon: Aldo Leopold Wilderness Solo Backpacking
A beautiful 3 day backpacking trip to an amazing historic site: The 1879 Battle of Animas Creek, an important battle in the Apache Wars. Apache warrior Victorio led 350 US Cavalry soldiers (mostly black Buffalo Soldiers and Navajo Scouts) into a side canyon, into an ambush, killing many soldiers (conflicting reports exist about how many), and taking 53 horses. I hiked in at Cave Creek trail, around Apache Peak, and down to Las Animas Creek on day one. Day two was a day hike up to Massacre Canyon and Victorio Peak Canyon, and Day three brought me back out. Cave Creek trail is in bad shape, with many washouts, several dangerous spots, but I carried tools and worked on a few of the worst spots. Hope you enjoy the beautiful scenery!
