Learn More About Refractive Surgery https://cirurgiarefrativabh.com.br/ In this special series on Refractive Surgery, Dr. Tiago César discusses the PRK technique. How it's performed and what the post-operative period is like. Refractive Surgery 0:17 PRK 0:48 Post-Operative 1:44 PRK is a type of refractive surgery where the corneal epithelium is removed for laser application. After the procedure, a contact lens is placed as a dressing, which remains in place for a few days until the epithelium recovers. The surgery is quite straightforward and well-tolerated by patients during laser application. A device is inserted to keep the eyes open, ensuring they don't blink. An anesthetic eye drop is instilled. The epithelium is removed in a few seconds and is painless. The laser is applied to this prepared area. In the first few hours after PRK, the eye waters a lot. This causes fluctuating vision for about 30 to 48 hours. It is recommended to stay in a darker environment, as this greatly reduces discomfort from light. Between the 3rd and 5th day post-surgery, vision fluctuates considerably. After the fifth day, it is possible to see well and perform daily activities almost normally. In one week, the curative contact lens is removed by the ophthalmologist. After the first week, vision improves daily and becomes completely stable between 2 and 3 months. The post-operative period for patients undergoing PRK surgery is well tolerated by the vast majority of patients.
