Why did the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) give the good news of Paradise to the first martyr of Islam, Sumayyah (RA) and her family amidst brutal torture? This is not only a heartbreaking history of the martyrdom of Yasir's family; it is a unique example of a family's infinite patience, steadfast faith, and sacrifice of life in the hope of Paradise for Tawheed. In today's episode, we will learn in the light of the Quran, authentic Hadith, and acceptable sources of Seerat—how Yasir (RA), Sumayyah (RA), Abdullah (RA), and Ammar ibn Yasir (RA) embraced Islam, what kind of torture they were subjected to due to lack of tribal protection, and why the Prophet (PBUH) gave them the good news of Paradise. The members of Yasir's family were tortured in front of each other on the hot sands of Mecca. The aim was to break their faith by showing them their own suffering. But the good news of the Prophet's Paradise created such a power in their hearts that even death became insignificant. Sumayyah (RA) was the first martyr in the history of Islam. Despite being martyred by Abu Jahl's brutal attack, she did not deviate from the belief in Tawheed. Later, Yasir (RA) and their son Abdullah (RA) also became martyrs. After losing his family members in front of his eyes, the persecution of Ammar (RA) increased. Although he was forced to utter words of blasphemy to save his life, his heart was full of faith. When the Prophet (RA) asked about the state of his heart, he said that his faith was as strong as before. Then Allah informed us through verse 106 of Surah An-Nahl that there is a special respite for the one who is forced to utter words of blasphemy, while his heart remains steadfast in faith. This incident teaches us that Allah is not only aware of the forced utterances of people, but also of the true faith in their hearts. This episode also discusses the exciting life of Suhaib al-Rumi (RA) and the incident of his unparalleled migration. He was known as ‘Al-Rumi’ due to his childhood captivity and upbringing among the Romans. Later, he came to Mecca and earned wealth through hard work and honesty and converted to Islam. On the way to Medina, the Quraysh blocked his path and demanded all his wealth. Suhaib (RA) did not hesitate for a moment to give up all his wealth in order to reach Allah and the Messenger of Allah (PBUH). When he reached Medina, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) gave him the good news and said—“O Abu Yahya! Your business has succeeded!” He gained the pleasure of Allah by losing his worldly wealth—and that was the greatest and most profitable transaction of his life. These incidents teach us—the value of faith is greater than all the wealth of the world. Nothing given up for the pleasure of Allah is actually lost; rather, Allah gives a better reward in return in this world and the Hereafter.
