Just days ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara, Donald Trump has once again questioned the purpose of the Alliance and criticized America's European allies. “Trump appears to fundamentally misunderstand the role of NATO,” says Keir Giles, Senior Consulting Fellow in the Russia and Eurasia Programme at Chatham House, in World Talks. According to Giles, this was particularly evident after the U.S. strike on Iran, from which NATO allies largely distanced themselves. A meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected on the sidelines of the summit. “A lot has changed since the failed Trump--Zelenskyy conversation in 2025,” Giles notes, arguing that Ukraine now approaches the talks from a much stronger position than before.
