Career On Rails
This film was probably made in the late 1950’s or early 1960’s by the NSWGR and is called “Career On Rails”. It clearly shows the greatness of the NSW railways and the opportunities which each employee had for advancement and training. The New South Wales Government Railway was made up of two private railway Companies – the Sydney Railway Company and the Hunter River Railway Company. In the 1850’s both of these companies came under the ownership of the New South Wales Government resulting in the NSWGR being the first publicly owned railway in the British Empire. Today, 2016, the railway in NSW is nothing more than a mere leaf on a tree compared to its former glory, with Government privatisation and some lines “Out of Service” or closed to many regional areas of NSW with former rail services replaced with buses or nothing, through too many years of political interference influenced by political party donations from business, back room deals, and corporations, - outside of rail. The selling off of the NSWGR, after many name changes – PTC, SRA, etc., was done by Politian’s and NOT by the owners of the NSWGR – the people of NSW. Politian’s are elected as “Care Takers” NOT owners!
