Lecture 6 The Formative Pre-Classic: Zapotec & Teotihuacan ARTH350G Latin American Art Travis Lee Clark Utah Valley University In this lecture we forge ahead on the formative or Pre-Classic Mesoamerican civilizations, including Monte Alban with its ballcourt and "dancing" figures. Then we tackle Teotihuacan, the Abode of the Gods (according to the Aztecs) and talk about whether this was a true empire. We talk about the Pyramid of the Sun, The Pyramid of the Moon, and some exciting new discoveries at the The Temple of the Feathered Serpent. Along the way we talk a little bit of the pitfalls of archaeology (See what I did there? ) and modern restorations and how drowning was as surefire way to get to paradise in Teotihuacan religion. We also give the people in Utah some baby name suggestions: Smoking Frog and Spearthrower Owl! Make me proud.
