KURD RETURNS : 78 years old legend Adv Ali Ahmed Kurd is back in action 2 lead new lawyers movement
Lawyers Launch Nationwide Movement Against 26th & 27th Constitutional Amendments | Ali Ahmed Kurd Leads Historic Campaign A major political and legal development has unfolded in Pakistan as the Lawyers Action Committee has announced a nationwide movement for the restoration of an independent judiciary and the repeal of the controversial 26th and 27th Constitutional Amendments. In this special LIVE press conference, senior lawyers and bar leaders from across Pakistan unveiled a joint declaration following a high-level meeting, outlining a comprehensive countrywide campaign aimed at defending judicial independence, constitutional supremacy, and the rule of law. One of the biggest announcements was the appointment of legendary lawyer Ali Ahmed Kurd, a leading figure of the historic 2007 Lawyers’ Movement against General Pervez Musharraf’s military regime, to spearhead this new nationwide struggle. His return to the forefront of Pakistan’s legal movement has generated significant political and public interest. The declaration also strongly condemned what the committee described as unfair trials and convictions of Mahrang Baloch, Imaan Mazari, and Hadi Ali Chattha, calling for respect for due process, fundamental rights, and constitutional protections for all citizens. Watch the complete press conference to hear every announcement, the full text of the declaration is as follows: Final Press Release The Lawyers Action Committee, in its meeting of 18 July 2026, resolved as follows: 1. While the adverse fallouts of the 26th and 27th Amendment continue to wreak havoc on the justice system in Pakistan; the present process of selecting HC judges is particularly horrific. The nomination of a High Court judge has now become like a nomination to the Senate - either bestowed as a reward for political loyalty or purchased through hard cash. When HC judges obtain their seat, not on competence or integrity, but on their ability to maneuver and intrigue their way through the different groups and political parties in the Judicial Commission; the future of justice in Pakistan is surely doomed. The interview process has been reduced to a mockery by making it in-camera and excluding several JCP members from the interview committee allowing blatantly unqualified candidates to pass through with flying colours. We call upon all JCP members still possessed of a conscience to refrain from indulging in this horse-trading exercise and speak out against this farce. 2. The Committee expressed its deep concern and sorrow at the loss of many dozens of lives and the worsening security situation in Balochistan punctuated with daily terror attacks. The government and the military must realise this festering problem will not disappear merely because they have banned its coverage in the national press and electronic media. After 20 wasted years of following a clearly failed security strategy, it is high time the military allows a genuinely elected leadership to come forward and take over the process of bringing peace to Balochistan. 3. The Committee notes that far from learning from its mistakes in Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, our establishment has doubled down on them and is now in process of repeating exactly the same mistakes in Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan. This fascination with creating a “hard state” has only alienated vast swathes of the populace in these regions, led to loss of lives and security and bred long-lasting resentments that are being fully exploited by others. The Committee calls for a fact-finding commission to be constituted for all four troubled regions to identify their issues and grievances and to hold public discourse regarding their solution. 4. Similarly, the continued incarceration of advocates Imaan Mazari & Hadi Chattha and numerous political prisoners such as Imran Khan, Dr. Yasmin Rashid, Mahrang Baloch and Ali Wazir only serves to demonstrate a complete lack of ideas on how to deal with dissenting voices and the silence and complicity of our judiciary, bar and political parties in the face of blatant injustice. This state of affairs is entirely unsustainable and is leading our nation to an irreversible catastrophe which no amount of posturing on the world stage can disguise. 5. The persistent attempts by the PBC and provincial Bar Councils to obstruct and rig elections in bar associations where they fear unfavourable result, are strongly condemned. All bar elections must, without exception, be held be held strictly on time as per law and with NADRA verification. Purported advocates with fake degrees or those holding alternate jobs must be removed from the Roll and there should be complete ban on voting by persons holding dual memberships of different bars. 6. This Committee announces its support for the ongoing dharna at Babarlo in Sindh against the disappearance of Priya Kumari and others and calls upon the Sindh government to respect minority rights and their legitimate grievances.
