What Scientists Found at Queensland's Gympie Pyramid Has Never Been Fully Explained
A terraced sandstone ridge outside a small Queensland town has been the subject of one of Australia's longest-running archaeological arguments for fifty years. Official surveys have concluded the terraces are the remains of a nineteenth-century vineyard, built by a Swiss immigrant with a documented, published interest in viticulture. But two objects found near the site, a carved stone statue unearthed in a paddock in 1966 and an inscribed stone pillar found in nearby swampland, have never been independently dated or published in peer-reviewed research, despite decades of competing claims about their origin. At least one archaeologist who has worked directly on the site has called it a serious, unexplained anomaly that has still never been the subject of a full excavation. Underneath the pyramid argument sits an older, documented significance to the Kabi Kabi people, whose connection to the site predates any of it.
