Smoke From Tailpipe - BMW

The latest BMW 6 cylinder turbo engines (b58) are developing an issue. Blowing smoke from exhaust accompanied with a rough idle and loud whistling noise. The issue can be very intermittent and hard to duplicate. The cause is simple, but the repair is not. BMW's have had this issues for many years on crank case vent valves going bad which are built into the valve cover assembly. But mostly on higher mileage vehicles around 120k miles and up. And the symptoms are different. The b58 engine (shown here) was introduced in 2017 till present, is a very well built engine and has less issues than the turbocharged inline 6 it replaced ( the n55). ----- This repair is not recommended to perform unless you have the factory training, factory special tools needed, factory instructions and factory diagnostic software to perform post repair calibrations.
