The golden light of the Costa de la Luz enchants Tamina Kallert on her journey through the south-west of Andalusia, as do the miles of beaches. It starts in Tarifa, the southernmost point of Europe and follows the route of the white villages, all of which have a Moorish past. Hiking over the narrow wooden planks of the "Caminito del Rey" along the rock faces is a spectacular adventure, as is climbing in the famous El Tajo Gorge in Ronda. Beautiful beaches and bays stretch along the Atlantic. Around 3,000 hours of sunshine are counted per year. The "Coast of Light" is considered to be the most beautiful coastal region in all of Spain. From here, the Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos, the Route of the White Villages, meanders through the mountainous hinterland. Ronda is the most famous of the 19 "Pueblos Blancos" of Andalusia. More than 700 years of Moorish rule have left their mark on Andalusia. After the Christians retook their lands, the mosques were destroyed or converted into churches. The minarets, the towers, however, often remained standing and are part of the landscape today.
