2004 Lincoln LS V8 Ultimate|Walk Around Video|In Depth Review
Built at the now defunct Wixom Assembly Plant, the Lincoln LS was developed out of necessity due to competitive luxury car manufacturers introducing sporty cars to their lineups. Mercedes-Benz had their AMG line, BMW with their M cars and Jaguar with the R-Line cars. Cadillac was the first with the Opel Omega-derived Cadillac Catera, the Caddy that Zigs...Sigh...that ultimately would become the CTS. Lincoln, with cars like the wallowy Town Car, Taurus-based Continental, the personal luxury Mark VIII and the Expedition-Based Navigator and Explorer-Based Aviator, hardly had anything to compete properly. Using the DEW98 platform shared with the Jaguar X-Type and the heritage styled Ford Thunderbird, the rear-wheel drive configuration was the best starting point. With the AJ V8, a sporty SelectShift automatic and smartly styled interior and exterior whispered "I'm a Lincoln", yet the car yelled "I want to be a BMW!!" The LS was short-lived, however, only lasting 6 model years before being replaced with the front-wheel drive Ford Fusion variant Zephyr and MKZ car. Sales weren't quite on par with what Lincoln wanted, with the highest sales numbers in 2000 and 2006 being the lowest, with less than 9,000 units sold. Lincoln has since stayed out of the sport sedan market, and has gone back to their roots as a traditional American land yacht highway cruiser brand with offerings such as the Continental, Corsair, Nautilus, Aviator and Navigator.
