Franz Schubert 12 Valses Nobles, Op.77 D.969 Recorded June 26, 2025 ~~ Franz Schubert (1797–1828) 12 Valses Nobles, Op. 77, D.969 (1827; published posthumously in 1828) In the final year of his short life, Schubert turned to the genre of dance with fresh imagination. While he had written hundreds of short Ländler, German dances, and waltzes for friends and private gatherings, the 12 Valses Nobles, D.969, belong to a more poetic sphere. Though each miniature spans only a page or two, together they form a mosaic of moods—by turns rustic, urbane, wistful, and exuberant. Unlike the glittering Viennese ballroom, Schubert’s waltzes breathe intimacy and character. Some exude charm and simplicity, while others turn unexpectedly inward, touched by harmonic surprises or fleeting melancholy. Heard as a sequence, they suggest less a ballroom suite than a gallery of portraits: moments of joy, longing, and quiet reflection distilled into elegant brevity. Issued by Diabelli in Vienna shortly after the composer’s death as Op. 77, the Valses Nobles were paired in print with his Valses Sentimentales (D.779).
