Adventure Awaits: Dempster Highway to the Arctic Ocean
From Jade City and Boya Lake to the Arctic Circle, Inuvik, and Tuktoyaktuk, we drive the Dempster Highway all the way to the Arctic Ocean in summer 2025. Expect real-world RV tips (fuel, ferries, dust, flats), midnight sun moments, and a full, chronological look at what this legendary route is like when it’s dry, dusty, and mosquito-heavy. =============================== Visitor Guide: 🔹 Dempster Highway (YT/NWT) ▫️ Gravel highway from near Dawson City to Inuvik (~740 km), then Inuvik–Tuktoyaktuk Highway to the Arctic Ocean (opened 2017). 🔹 Tombstone Territorial Park & Interpretive Center ▫️ Best early stop for geology, wildlife, and route info; pick up current road/conditions updates. 🔹 Arctic Circle & Northwest Territories Border ▫️ Iconic photo stops; expect wind, dust, and variable conditions even in summer. 🔹 Inuvik (Western Arctic Visitor Centre) ▫️ Cultural exhibits, permits/info, reliable local intel. 🔹 Tuktoyaktuk (Arctic Ocean) ▫️ Oceanfront camping is paid on arrival. ▫️ See pingos and dip your toes in the Arctic Ocean. =============================== Travel Tips: 🔹 Fuel & Supplies: Fill at the Dempster junction; next dependable fuel is Eagle Plains, then Inuvik. Food is very expensive up north—stock up early. 🔹 Ferries: Two summer ferries on the NWT section (Peel River near Fort McPherson & Mackenzie River near Tsiigehtchic). 🔹 Tires & Dust: Carry a full-size spare + repair kit (we used ours). Tape/foam-seal rear doors to cut dust; plan a deep clean afterward. 🔹 Mosquitoes: Bring serious repellent, head nets, and an electric swatter. Expect clouds of bugs in calm/warm weather. 🔹 Camping: Tuktoyaktuk oceanfront camping is paid on-site =============================== Historical Insights & Fun Facts: 🔹 The Dempster Highway follows routes used by Gwich’in peoples and early patrols; named for NWMP Insp. 🔹 The Inuvik–Tuktoyaktuk Highway (2017) created the first all-season road connection to the Arctic Ocean in Canada. 🔹 Tuktoyaktuk is known for pingos—ice-cored hills; the region includes some of the world’s largest (Pingo Canadian Landmark). 🔹 Inuvik was built in the 1950s as a planned community on higher ground to replace flood-prone Aklavik. 🔹 Above the Arctic Circle, the midnight sun keeps it light 24 hours around the solstice. =============================== ⏰ Time Codes ⏰ 0:00 – Intro 0:26 – Start of the Dempster Highway 4:26 – Tombstone Territorial Park Interpretive Center 8:05 – Dealing with Mosquitoes in the Northern Yukon 16:16 – Rock in the Wheel (Screeching Fix) 17:48 – Helicopter Landing on the Dempster 19:23 – Fueling Up in Eagle Plains 21:07 – The Arctic Circle 22:23 – The Northwest Territories 26:17 – First Ferry Crossing (Peel River) 31:07 – Ferry & Road Closure Info (NWT 511) 33:35 – Second Ferry Crossing (Mackenzie River/Tsiigehtchic) 35:07 – Even More Dust in the Van 37:43 – Arriving in Inuvik, Northwest Territories 38:00 – Western Arctic Regional Visitor Centre 41:44 – Shopping in Inuvik (Costs & Options) 44:42 – Welcome to Tuktoyaktuk 46:36 – Lowest the Sun Gets Above the Arctic Circle (3:14 AM) 47:19 – Grandma’s Kitchen in Tuktoyaktuk 51:03 – Camping on the Arctic Ocean (Tuk) 54:52 – Pingos Near Tuktoyaktuk 55:07 – Local Terms & Cultural Notes 56:33 – Worst Night Ever: Mosquito Invasion 1:01:43 – Flat Tire: On-Route Repair 1:16:13 – Driving Back to Dawson City (Route Recap) =============================== Support Us & Follow Our Journey!
