At the 1982 World Championships, she landed six triple jumps to win the title, although four of them were triple toe loops. While she also had triple salchows and loops in her repertoire, they were less consistent. Zayak's skating contributed to the creation of what became informally known as the Zayak rule, enacted at the 1982 ISU Congress, which states that a skater may not perform the same kind of triple jump more than twice, and for it to be given full credit on both occasions, one of the two triples must be incorporated into a combination or sequence. The rule encouraged skaters to display a greater variety of skills." With Scott Hamilton of Denver already crowned men's champion at the world figure skating championships, the United States scored its first double in the sport in 23 years. Miss Zayak had fallen during attempted triple jumps three times in the national championships at Indianapolis and finished third. She fell trying the jumps again in the short program here and thought it had cost her victory once more. ''I cried for an hour before going on the ice for the free skating because I thought I couldn't win the title,'' she said. The whole United States team watched anxiously when Miss Zayak came to the combination double flip and triple toe loop - the jump that had sent her sprawling on the ice the day before. This time she did it perfectly and came off the ice laughing and shouting, ''I didn't fall, I didn't fall.'' But Miss Zayak had to wait a long time before she could be sure she was champion. She went into the free skating in seventh place, with some of Europe's best skaters still waiting to perform their routines. A New Scoring System Miss Zayak finished with 7.4 points. Katarina Witt of East Germany was second with 7.8. A new scoring system helped Miss Zayak to make the move from seventh place to first. The free skating, now the third stage of the competition after the compulsory figures and the short program, is worth more points than it used to be. The three American skaters finished in the first seven. Rosalynn Sumners of Edmonds, Wash., was sixth and Vikki de Vries of Colorado Springs seventh. --- #figureskating #フィギュアスケート #eiskunstlauf #фигурноекатание #피겨스케이팅 #pattinaggioartistico #patinageartistique
