The further I traveled through Maine, the stronger the feeling became that the state actually consists of two completely different worlds. There's mainland Maine, which is unusual and atmospheric, yet still more or less understandable and similar to the rest of New England. And then there's island Maine—exploring which feels more like a journey into a separate reality, with its own rules, its own rhythm of life, and its own sense of time. Today we'll travel to Maine's largest inhabited island, which has no physical connection to the mainland. It's accessible only by boat, ferry, or plane. It's called Wainalhaven, and over a thousand people live there year-round. It has a school, shops, a police force, firefighters, and a life of its own, unlike the mainland. I'll ride my bike around it, showing you its rugged nature and the neighborhoods near the ferry terminal.
