In this video, Dr Supriya Puranik is going to tell you about the precautions to be taken before ovum pick up in IVF (Ovum Pick up Procedure) in our IVF series. The couple has decided to conceive a baby and now they have started taking hormonal injections. Some women develop eggs in 10 days, some in 12 days and some in 16 days. When the eggs grow bigger, that is when the follicles become 18-20 mm, then the doctor gives a final injection to the women to mature the eggs, which is very important. This injection is given at night so that after 34-36 hours the doctor can plan the egg extraction process, that is, ovum pickup. This injection can be taken at the center or from the hospital near your home. It is very important to take this injection at the right time at night, if it is not taken on time then the final result gets spoiled. The husband should ejaculate three or four days before the ovum pick up procedure, because a semen sample has to be given on the day of ovum pickup. A day before Ovum Pickup, the doctor gives you a dose of antibiotics, a medicine to clear the stomach, which the women have to take, along with that, they also have to get their fresh blood reports. If the women are older, the doctor will also advise you to get a fresh ECG and chest x-ray done. Women have to come on an empty stomach for egg retrieval, that is, they should not eat or drink anything after midnight, because anesthesia is given for this. The patient has to come to the hospital at the right time so that pre procedures can be done. The patient has to go to the washroom before the operation so that the urine bag remains empty. Keep your fresh reports with you at the time of the procedure. Women have to come to the hospital two hours before Ovum Pickup. On the day of ovum pick up procedure, the husband has to give his semen sample but if he has Azoospermia then the doctor plans TESA procedure for him on the same day. If that is the case then there should be another person with you who gives consent. While going to the hospital, be clean, do not apply perfume or deodorant at all, because its smell has a bad effect on the gamete. Keep your jewellery at home as well as do not apply nail paint. If you use contact lenses then keep those at home too. If the woman is taking any medicine like thyroid, blood pressure or heart, then that medicine has to be taken in the morning with a sip of water. But diabetes medicine has to be taken after asking your doctor and you have to tell the doctor how much insulin you take and which diabetic medicine you are taking, then the doctor will tell you whether this medicine has to be taken on an empty stomach or not. The egg pickup procedure lasts for 15-20 minutes, this process is absolutely pain free (Is egg retrieval for IVF painful?). After the completion of this procedure, the doctor advises you to go home. This is a day care procedure for which you have to stay in the hospital for 5-6 hours. Sometimes women may feel slight pain after this procedure. For more information, watch the full video.
