Nares Island Road to Nares Beach - Onto 4WD Track Overlooking Nares Island and Duke of Orleans Bay
Following Nares Island Road to Nares Beach, then a short sandy 4WD track leading to small granite headland overlooking the class A nature reserve of Nares Island where the flora and fauna is highly protected, providing a vital habitat for local seabirds. Further across the Duke of Orleans Bay is John Island. The Forester XT coped easily with short sandy track and the parking was in the most picturesque place. The granite outcrop where I turned around could be accessed by a 4WD as others had obviously done, but I prefer to use my feet because these formations are fragile, ancient, and home to highly specialized flora and fauna, driving over them damages unique micro-ecosystems.
