Wandelen in en rond Sint-Oedenrode | Langs twee kastelen en de Dommel

My walk begins at St. Martin's Church, a striking Neo-Gothic structure from 1913 that replaced an earlier church from 1808. From here, I walk towards Dommelrode Castle. This castle was originally known as De Bocht, a reference to its location in a bend of the Dommel River. That name remained in use until around 1800. In the nineteenth century, the name changed to Mariëndaal, after which it eventually received the name Dommelrode. After this first historical monument, I continue my route to Henkenshage Castle. Although it originated as a medieval manor house, the current building only acquired its castle-like appearance in the nineteenth century. Via the surrounding greenery, I then reach Eerschot, where the centuries-old Knoptoren tower rises above the Dommel Valley. A chapel stood on this site as early as around the year 1000, making this one of the oldest historical locations in Sint-Oedenrode. Afterwards, I follow the Dommel River, which meanders through the landscape. Along restored river arms, green banks, and open fields, the route leads through a varied area where nature and cultural history constantly alternate.
