While I was in Izmir, several locals warned me not to go up a certain hill. They only said briefly, “It’s not safe there,” but never explained why. And that was exactly why I decided to see it for myself — because sometimes, the things we fear most are just perceptions no one has ever dared to question. As I got closer, I began to see another side of the city — one that looked nothing like the postcards. Old houses, cracked walls, the sound of children running, and curious stares following me with every step. It felt like another world within Turkey — a world that outsiders barely know exists. It wasn’t beautiful, but it was real in a way that was impossible to look away from. This journey wasn’t about challenging fear, but about understanding the life hidden behind it. I didn’t come to prove whether this place was safe or dangerous; I simply wanted to understand why people choose to live here, and why so many wanted me to stay away.
