We trekked three hours deep into an unnamed Peruvian jungle creek, following an old prospector's map and geological clues. The humidity was brutal, and the bedrock was locked together. But once we started prying open the slate shelves and reached the bottom of a deep bedrock cleft, we hit a pocket of red clay, black sand, and garnets that surpassed all our expectations. Inside that narrow crack, the gold nuggets were literally stacked on top of each other. Raw, unrefined gold, right out of the bedrock.
