The mid 1990s were a time of transition and change in western railroading. Both the Southern Pacific and Santa Fe were investing money into their motive power and infrastructure as they prepared for the last major series of mergers that would dramatically change the American railroad landscape. The Bay Area of California was an especially interesting place, as both SP and ATSF had older first and second generation power working alongside the newest in locomotive technology. GP9s, Cadillacs, Dash-8s, Warbonnets, and Amtrak San Joaquins are all seen during this pivotal time in railroad history.
