The Tuljapur Bhavani Mandir, located on a hill in Maharashtra's Dharashiv district, is a major pilgrimage site famous for the 12th-century temple dedicated to Goddess Bhavani, a revered form of Parvati. It is one of the 51 Shakti Pithas and famous as the family deity (Kuldevi) of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who was gifted a sword and the black stone temple is a revered center of worship. The town is busiest during Navaratri, attracting large crowds and best visited from October to February. The major festival is Navratri (or Durga Puja), which is celebrated twice a year with massive crowds arriving during the Dasara festival, often by walking from different parts of Maharashtra. Tulja Bhavani Temple is built in the 12th century CE by Maratha Mahamandaleshwara Māradadeva Kadamb. Built using basalt rock and lime mortar. The temple is built in a Hemadpanti style of architecture and it is known for its intricate carvings and houses a 3-foot-tall idol of the goddess. It is one of the three and a half Shakti Peethas in Maharashtra. The temple is closely associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who often sought the goddess's blessings. Legend suggests this is where the right arm of Sati fell. The temple features a black stone structure with a notable entrance known as the Sardar Nimbalkar Gate Temple is Managed by the Shri Tuljabhavani Mandir Sansthan. How to Reach: The nearest major railway station is in Solapur, approximately 45 km away. Nearby Attractions: Ghatshila Temple and Papanashi Theerth are popular nearby spots. It is considered a jagrut devasthan (living/active abode) and one of the 51 Shakti Pithas where Goddess Parvati is worshipped. The idol of Tulja Bhavani is swayambhu (self-manifested) and made of granite. It is a three-foot-tall idol with eight hands holding weapons and is in a sitting position, known as padmasana. Association with Shivaji Maharaj: The temple is closely linked to the Maratha Empire, and it is believed that Goddess Bhavani gifted a sword—the "Bhawani Sword"— to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for his victory in battles. Worship Rituals: Daily rituals involve a bath, changing clothes, and offering food four times a day. The Chaughada (musical instrument) is played three times, and Shibina (procession) takes place on Tuesdays, full moons, and festive days. Other Attractions: The temple complex includes the Kallola water tank (believed to hold water from the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati) and the Gomukh Theerth.
