Rohtak Road Redevelopment | May 2026 Update | Drain Work Near Completion

The Delhi government has recently handed over the important Delhi–Rohtak Road corridor NH-9 (old NH-10) from the Delhi PWD to the National Highways Authority of India for major redevelopment and long-term maintenance. This is considered one of the biggest road upgrade decisions for West Delhi and the Delhi–Haryana connectivity corridor in recent years. Which road stretch has been transferred? The transferred stretch is the Delhi–Rohtak Road / NH-10 corridor from: • Peeragarhi Chowk to • Tikri Border (Delhi–Haryana border) Length: • Around 13.2 km officially, though some reports mention the wider redevelopment influence zone as nearly 18 km. This road passes through major areas like: • Peeragarhi • Paschim Vihar side junctions • Mundka • Ghevra • Tikri Kalan • Tikri Border It is one of the busiest entry corridors into Delhi from Haryana and also heavily used by industrial traffic. Why was the road handed over to NHAI? Delhi govt and PWD admitted that the road condition had become extremely poor due to: • Massive potholes • Waterlogging • Sewer overflow • Heavy truck movement • Encroachment pressure • Poor drainage capacity • Repeated patchwork failures PWD Minister Parvesh Verma said residents had made many complaints regarding the condition of the road. The government felt that: • PWD was struggling to maintain such a high-load national corridor • National Highways Authority of India has more expertise in: o highway-grade construction, o drainage engineering, o flyovers/elevated corridors, o traffic management, o and faster execution. Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari reportedly gave in-principle approval for the transfer. What redevelopment is planned? 1. “World-Class Highway” Upgrade The biggest statement from govt sources is that the road will be redeveloped into a: “world-class highway corridor” Though DPR details are not fully public yet, the likely upgrades include: • Complete reconstruction of carriageway • Better pavement quality • Service road improvements • Scientific drainage • Utility shifting • Better lighting • New signage • Lane marking upgrades • Safer pedestrian infrastructure • Junction redesigns 2. Major Drainage Overhaul This is probably the MOST important part. Officials identified waterlogging as the core reason behind road collapse. Reports specifically mention: • overflowing drains, • sewer water, • and inadequate stormwater systems. Expected drainage works: • New RCC drains • Underground drainage improvements • Rainwater disposal redesign • Sewer coordination with DJB agencies This is crucial because Mundka–Tikri stretch often gets badly damaged during monsoon. 3. Possible Road Widening & Corridor Expansion Some reports and internal discussions indicate: • widening at bottlenecks, • better merging lanes, • redesign of intersections, • improved traffic flow for heavy vehicles. There are also expectations of: • dedicated service lanes in dense market areas, • slip roads, • improved U-turn geometry. However, final approved widening drawings are not public yet. 4. Coordination with Metro & Utilities The road corridor has: • Delhi Metro pillars/stations, • IGL gas pipelines, • sewer lines, • power utilities. Because of this, the project earlier faced execution complications. The new NHAI-led model is expected to: • centralize permissions, • speed up utility shifting, • reduce inter-department delays.
