As we approach the 80th anniversary of the Appel du 18 juin 1940, Professor Julian Jackson talks about his highly-acclaimed recent biography of General de Gaulle, ‘A Certain Idea of France: The life of Charles de Gaulle’ (2018). The author shares his experience of writing the book and reflect on the role of de Gaulle in French politics, from his war-time leadership of Free France to his resignation as President in 1969, as well as his legacy almost 50 years after his death.
