The Story of Gilgamesh – The First Hero of History Gilgamesh was a legendary, and possibly historical, king of the ancient Sumerian city of Uruk in Mesopotamia (today's Iraq). He is believed to have ruled during the early dynastic period, around 2700 BC. Uruk was one of the first great cities in human history and became a symbol of the world's earliest civilization. Gilgamesh became famous through the Epic of Gilgamesh, the oldest surviving epic poem ever written. It was first written on clay tablets in cuneiform script more than 4,000 years ago. At the beginning of the story, Gilgamesh is a proud and powerful king. The gods create Enkidu, a strong wild man, to challenge him. After a great fight, the two become close friends and travel together on dangerous adventures. They defeat the giant Humbaba in the Cedar Forest and later the mighty Bull of Heaven. When Enkidu dies, Gilgamesh is deeply shocked. For the first time, he understands that every human must die. This loss begins his long journey to find the secret of eternal life. In the end, he learns that no person can escape death. True immortality comes through the things we create, the stories we leave behind, and the memory of future generations. Today, the Epic of Gilgamesh is one of the greatest treasures of world literature.
