Brilliant composers have hidden treasures in their master pieces. There are FIVE points one has to remember for every Avarthanam learnt. 1) Notes - Focus very clearly on the pauses and Janda Varisais placed in the notes. Pauses are most of the time make or break of a Thalam. 2) Lyrics - Watch how they are tightly linked to the notes. Sing the lyrics and get the feel of the raga . At the end of the day when you play, the song must be heard clearly. 3) Thalam - Never try to ignore missing of beats . Thalam is a "habit" and needs good practice. 4) Techniques - The most important learning for a Vainika is techniques and hand dynamics without which the playing will be expressionless. 5) Note patterns - Varnams are a stepping stone to Manodharma .
