By 1925 his company produced 134,000 tons of soap a year, owned 750,000 hectares of Belgian Congo forest, ran a private model village of 800 cottages on the Wirral, and had been raised to a viscountcy of the Western Isles. He also signed his name, in 1911, to a labour regime that by 1922 sent Congolese palm cutters to prison for 2 to 3 months if they missed their quota. Two villages, one balance sheet, never reconciled.
