Fue fundado el 20 de mayo de 1955 por Luis Felipe Rivera Staper, quien decidió nombrarlo así debido a su grande devoción a San Alberto Magno. Se convirtió en municipio en noviembre del año 1967 siendo segregado del municipio del Río de Oro. Su clima es cálido, su vegetación muy diversa, tierras fértiles y fauna variada. Es considerado "la puerta de oro del Caribe colombiano". Este municipio cuenta con diferentes zonas turísticas, parques, colegios, bibliotecas y empresas o cooperativas que son de gran importancia para la economía del municipio, que se basa principalmente en los cultivos de palma africana, arroz, maíz, caña de azúcar y explotaciones mineras.
