The Full Manure and Slurry Process: Barn, Pit, Loader, Field | FS 25 | Etruria Farm | Timelapse #77

Welcome back to the Etruria Farm Timelapse. Field preparation continues on the Etruria farm as we move into the next important stage before planting—mulching and fertilization. While a hired worker handles the mulching operations across multiple fields, we focus on applying natural fertilizers produced by our cattle operation. Today’s goal is to demonstrate the complete nutrient cycle that starts in the cow barns and ends in the fields. The process begins with manure management. Our barns are equipped with a chain-driven cleaning system that automatically removes manure from the stalls. A powered scraper drags the manure into a collection pit, where it is transferred through an underground conveyor system to a loading station. From there, manure can be handled in different ways. We test both methods, first loading it into a spreader using a telescopic loader. Once the spreader is full, we head to the field and begin fertilizing. To improve efficiency, we later switch to a transfer trailer that can be loaded directly from the chain loader and then refill the spreader in the field without returning to the farm. When the manure supply is exhausted, we move on to the second organic fertilizer produced by the cows—slurry. A tractor equipped with a transport tank and a self-propelled slurry applicator are prepared and moved to the fields. The slurry is applied directly to the soil while a support tractor continuously transports fresh loads from the slurry storage pit at the barns. The self-propelled applicator is equipped with a suction system, allowing it to refill directly from the transport trailer in the field and continue working without interruption. By the end of the day, multiple fields have been fertilized using both manure and slurry, completing another important step in the farm’s sustainable production cycle.
