The Island That Doesn't Want You Here

After climbing Dukono — one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes — I head deeper into Halmahera to find its two other active volcanoes. Ibu volcano is currently under a Level 3 eruption warning. No climbing allowed. But I'm going anyway — as close as I can get. The road there doesn't exist on Google Maps. What locals call a "good road" turns out to include broken tracks, flooded sections, and a river crossing on a makeshift bamboo raft with my heavy adventure bike. I camp at the foothills of Ibu — with one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes erupting metres away. Then I attempt to reach a waterfall that drops straight into the ocean — until a flooded river stops me. Almost ready to give up, a local boat captain changes everything. The final challenge: hiking to the crater lake of Gunung Gamkonora — the highest peak on Halmahera — and camping inside the crater at 1,560m. This is Halmahera. It fights back. But it always finds a way. 🏍️ Previous episode — Dukono Volcano: 📍 Locations: Tobelo → Ibu Village → Kedi → Gunung Gamkonora, Halmahera, Indonesia #Halmahera #Indonesia #IndoWild #VolcanoHiking #AdventureMotorcycle #Gamkonora #IbuVolcano
