From a banned drink kings executed people for, to plantations worked by the enslaved, to the year Brazil burned 78 million bags of it while the world went hungry — this is the hidden price of coffee ☕ This video traces coffee's real history: from the highland forests of Ethiopia and the Sufi monasteries of Yemen, through the coffeehouses that built the London Stock Exchange and Lloyd's of London, to the slave colony of Saint-Domingue, the coffee barons of Brazil, and the price crisis hitting your cup in 2026. The story of coffee has never been about the bean. It's about who controls the supply. We begin in 1931 on the docks of Santos, Brazil, where the government shoveled millions of sacks of coffee into furnaces, dumped them at sea, and paved roads with them to prop up the price during the Great Depression. Then we rewind more than a thousand years — to the legend of the Ethiopian goatherd Kaldi, the Yemeni port of Mokha (Mocha) that guarded the world's first coffee monopoly, and the Sufi monks who brewed qahwa to stay awake through night prayers. We cover Mecca's 1511 coffee ban, the Ottoman Sultan Murad IV making coffee a capital offence in 1633, the pilgrim Baba Budan who smuggled seven seeds to India, and the Dutch, French, and Portuguese who stole the plant into Java, Martinique, and Brazil — including naval officer Gabriel de Clieu sharing his water ration with a seedling across the Atlantic. From there: London's "penny universities," King Charles II's failed 1675 coffeehouse ban that collapsed in eleven days, Prussia's "coffee sniffers," and the birth of modern finance at coffee counters. Then the ledger — Saint-Domingue producing roughly half the world's coffee with around 500,000 enslaved people, the 1791 Haitian Revolution, Brazil importing some 4.9 million enslaved Africans and abolishing slavery last in the Americas in 1888, and the 1869 coffee-leaf-rust plague that turned Ceylon (Sri Lanka) into a tea nation. Finally: the 1962 International Coffee Agreement as a Cold War tool, the 1989 collapse and the 1990s coffee crisis that pushed prices below 50 cents a pound, the rise of Vietnam, and the record-breaking 2024–2026 price spikes driven by Brazil's drought and freak weather.
