In this context: We observe that dynamics are present in variations such as those in a song, where the introduction has softer sounds and the chorus has greater intensity. We differentiate between dynamic and less dynamic instruments, such as the kick drum, which goes from making no sound to reaching high intensity peaks, versus melodic instruments such as the bass, whose intensity variations are smaller. Dynamics Processors: Noise Gate and Compressor When discussing dynamics processors, we highlight two essential tools: Noise Gate: Controls low-frequency dynamics, eliminating lower-frequency sounds. Compressor: Manages high-frequency dynamics, limiting intensity peaks to avoid clipping. How the Compressor Works: We set a threshold, so it only acts if the signal exceeds this limit. We set a compression ratio, which defines the intensity of the compression, as in the case of "4:1," where every 4 dB above the threshold is reduced to 1 dB. This allows us to control intensity peaks, avoiding clipping and improving sound quality. Side Chain Compression What is side chain compression? Unlike standard compression, side chain compression uses an external signal to determine how another signal is compressed. This method is key in music production, especially for managing elements that share similar frequencies, such as the kick drum and bass. Practical Example: Compression between Kick and Bass Drum We selected the bass channel as the target for compression. We set the compressor to a high ratio to make the effect more evident. We assigned the kick channel as the source of compression, so that each time the kick drum plays, the bass guitar temporarily reduces its intensity, leaving room for the kick drum to become more audible. Results: We observed how the bass guitar "gives up" its space to the kick drum by compressing itself during its hits, achieving a clearer and more defined mix. Benefits and Applications Side-chain compression is essential to prevent similar frequencies from being masked, improving the intelligibility of instruments in a mix. Recommended Use: Subtle live adjustments to prevent the effect from becoming exaggerated. This video is not officially sponsored or affiliated with Behringer.
