Once the ecclesias were established it behoved the members to study the Bible for themselves so that they were well equipped ambassadors for Christ wherever they went. No New Testament reference speaks of paid roles in ecclesial life. In fact, if a man didn’t work (by choice) then neither did he eat. *Ai Summary* We explore whether a paid ministry is scriptural. Beginning with 1 Corinthians 9—often cited in support—we examine Paul’s argument, his use of Deuteronomy and the Lord’s commission. Though Paul had a right to support, he voluntarily surrendered it, working as a tentmaker and relying on voluntary donations (Philippians 4; 2 Corinthians 11). Crucially, the apostolic office was unique and temporary. When we turn to Hebrews 7, we see that the Levitical priesthood and tithing system have been superseded by Christ’s Melchizedek priesthood. Under the New Covenant, all believers form a “royal priesthood” (1 Peter 2:9) – a lay ministry where every member has a gift to serve (Romans 12; 1 Corinthians 12; Ephesians 4). Elders are worthy of “double honour” (1 Timothy 5:17-18), not a salary. While voluntary support for missionaries’ travel/accommodation is scriptural, a regular paid clergy finds no New Testament foundation.
