For weeks, the city has been ringing out explosions of fireworks, often illegal ones. For those in possession, these fireworks can have serious consequences besides serious injuries, the police warn. According to the police, it's relatively easy for teenagers to obtain things like nitrates. "What many parents don't realize is that in the past, you'd have a black hand if fireworks went off, and now, with those really heavy fireworks, your hand is simply cut off," says a police spokesperson. A Cobra 8 can cause a lot of damage, she says. "If you were to put this in a car and detonate it, you'd have a convertible. So you can imagine how dangerous it is if dozens of these were lying around in a house or garage." "I think a lot of people don't realize that it's a crime to be caught with a Cobra or nitrate," says the spokesperson. "And that you can also get a criminal record for those things based on fireworks." For example, if you were to try to enter the United States, it would turn out you'd been caught with an explosive. And then you probably wouldn't be allowed into the United States at all. The police hope that Amsterdam residents will report it if they suspect illegal fireworks are being stored somewhere. This is still relatively rare. "What we're seeing in terms of anonymous crime reporting is that it's really very low in Amsterdam," says the spokesperson.
